Educational Offerings for Schools and Preschools

In our educational offerings, we follow the guidelines from “Bildung für Nachhaltige Entwicklung (BNE: Education for Sustainable Development in Germany) with special emphasis on ecological issues. The classes are intended for learners of every age including kindergarten groups, school classes, university students and corporations, as well as potential educators.

Our content focuses on the issues related to sustainable resource use and food consumption such as organic agriculture, urban food production, seasonality and regionality, biological diversity, and healthy, sustainable nutrition. We also explore global problems such as food sovereignty, justice and climate change.

We value collaborative learning processes; therefore, we cooperate with cultural institutions, artists and other organisations for environmental education to spread our message about ecological urban agriculture using multiple forms of cultural literacy.

TO THE FIELDS: Ever seen a greenhouse within a greenhouse? What is a bee bag? 28 different varieties of tomatoes– who needs that? Compost that heats up to 60ºC? Why is that tree painted white?

Just stop by! At our three project spaces, the Market Garden, the Community Garden and Orchard, your kids can check out urban agriculture, taste-test their way through, or pitch in in the garden

Sign up for a one-time hands-on tour, a day-long or half-day workshop with a specific focus, or a weekly/regular event. We tailor our offering to fit your needs.

SCHOOL GARDEN 2.0: Your school garden has seen better days? Or you haven’t even got one? No green spaces at school? No one has the time or know-how to deal with it? No problem! We come to you, plan and design your school garden. With our framework for a mobile raised bed system, you and your kids can start gardening on any plot of land at least 1 m2- even an asphalt schoolyard.

Following the initial consultation, we visit you on a regular basis and accompany the gardeners large and small throughout the season.

MUNDRAUB: No worries—it’s not stealing. It’s just taking back what belongs to us. For two to four hours, we take you on a “Food Theft” tour, harvest fruit and nuts from public green spaces and subsequently turn them into marmalades, spreads, juices or whatever tickles our fancy.

All offerings can be individually tailored to your needs, group size and budget.

Academy

GUIDED TOURS: In our guided tours, we discuss how to realize the idea of urban agriculture in West Leipzig. We show how to produce food in the Community Garden using recycled containers and composted organic material, and how the renovated Market Garden

has managed to grow 500 assorted species of vegetables, herbs and fruit in the middle of the city. Upon request, we address individual topics in depth—i.e. compost, urban planning, vegetable diversity—using concrete examples. The tours can be booked for the individual projects (Community Garden, Market Garden, Orchard) or any combination of the three.

EXCURSIONS: Our educational offering also includes themed field trips in the neighbourhood, such as excursions focussing on the Edible City, neighbourhood development, open spaces, etc.

TEAM EVENTS: Your company would like offer something other than the typical cookie-cutter teambuilding event ending with a canoe ride and bratwurst? Feel like thinking outside the box? How about a guided fruit picking tour, complete with facts about the local cultural history and group cooking session?

Of course you can also just spend a day with your colleagues on the vegetable field getting your hands dirty, and we’ll show you how the gardeners relax after work!

PRESENTATIONS: Upon request, we offer specialist presentations/workshops about our focus topics.

All offerings are available in English or German. The minimum total price for guided tours or excursions is 40€ for 45 minutes; groups with more than 25 participants may need to book two tours. During the garden season, events are possible from 8:00 a.m. daily. Prompt registration appreciated. Team events and presentations may be booked individually.

Consulting

Together with the foundation “anstiftung & ertomis” and other regional platforms, we advise garden initiatives, cities, and other stakeholders in establishing new urban gardens or maintaining existing gardens.

The goal of the consultancy platform is to support gardens in the city and encourage their development as places for meeting, learning, participating and experiencing nature.

We offer advice about the following topics:

PARTICIPATION: How can I get neighbours and stakeholders to engage in my project?

ORGANISATION: Do we/I need an organisation to establish a garden? What forms are there and which one would suit our/my project best? How can I establish such an organisation?

GARDENING: Can I make my garden mobile? Which types of plants can be grown in bread baskets and sacks?

AREA: Can I cultivate vegetables in a green space/park and do I need permission? What does my area need to transform into a thriving garden?

FINANCES: What is crowdfunding and how is it done? Where else can I get funds for my project?

SUSTAINABILITY: What does my garden have to do with food sovereignty and EU standards? Or, how can I highlight social and ecological issues in/via my garden project?

We are happy to visit you on site or you can come to us and become more familiar with our work. The length of the consultation is based on your needs. From a one or two-day workshop to a three-week practical experience at Annalinde…anything is possible.

For cities, municipalities and other interested parties:

Do you have an open area in your city or district and are you looking to promote urban gardening? Are you interested in the topic and want to learn more? We would love to share our experiences with you and support the development of green, participatory neighbourhoods.

Horticulture

We help to build urban gardens large and small. We also have our complementary educational offers relating to subjects such as organic horticulture, biodiversity, composting, seed collection, and seasonal/healthy nutrition. Our team of professional gardeners aids with building and caring for gardens as well as the technical execution of garden work, for private individuals as well as institutions. Areas of speciality include:

URBAN AREAS: Is your desired area sealed up, contaminated, or on a rooftop? With our own areas in Leipzig, we’ve gathered lots of experience gardening in typical urban conditions.

TEMPORARY GARDENS: Whether at exhibitions, workshops or seminars: our flexible growing system facilitates temporary garden installations, possibly with interactive elements.

CLASSICAL HORTICULTURE: We help plan shrubbery, garden care, consultancy and landscape design for gardens in Leipzig.

PARTICIPATION: We enjoy it most when we plan, build and care for a garden together with its future users. Once we take the first steps, we can figure out what is necessary so that you can eventually care for and use the garden on your own.
